Before, graffiti and paintings in the street are considered as vandalism. But thanks to artists and our present culture, this form of art is being embraced by different places and cities. One of those known places is Georgetown, Penang. In 2012 Penang’s municipal council hired London-trained Lithuanian artist, Ernest Zacharevic and charged him with breathing new life into some of the atmospheric Chinese shop-houses around the inner city. An effort to spawn awareness of the rich history of the streets, the project was a success with Zacharevic turning certain areas into thriving tourist destinations that also became the much-talked about object of attention among locals. Plus, there are “Markings” – 52 iron structures which provide a fun pictoral anecdote about the history of the street it is located on, and is a rather fun way to learn a little bit about Penang’s heritage.
The combination of both art works plus the streets of Georgetown is a great visual experience. So come and join me with my street art hunt.
